Elon Musk Introduced Tesla’s New Generation Robotaxi and Humanoid Robots

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla revealed its vision for the future with three new presentations. In the presentation made by multi-billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, the vehicle called Cybercab, which can drive completely autonomously without a driver, attracted great attention. In addition to Cybercab, Musk also introduced the robovan vehicle, which he said “has the capacity to carry up to 20 people.” Speaking about the design of new vehicles, Musk said, “The future should look suitable for the future.”

“We, Robot” The presentation titled “In California” Warner Bros. It took place at the Studios. While coming to the presentation area, Musk entered by sitting in the front passenger seat of the robotaxi. Cybercab’s design stands out as a combination of Tesla’s sedan models and Cybertruck. The vehicle has two passenger seats in the rear and its doors open in the shape of butterfly wings. Additionally, the vehicles do not have a steering wheel or pedals.

It Will Be On The Road Before 2027

Elon Musk stated that the vehicles will be offered for sale at a price below 30 thousand dollars and that they aim to have these vehicles on the roads before 2027. Admitting that this goal was quite optimistic, Musk came to the fore when the dates foreseen in similar promises in the past did not come true. Musk stated that there is now a transition from driver-controlled autonomous driving capable vehicles to the era of completely self-driving vehicles. He argued that when we transition to this new era, accidents will decrease significantly and many lives will be saved.

Elon Musk emphasized that millions of Tesla vehicles around the world have improved their autonomous driving capacity by gaining real-life experiences in traffic. He added that Cybercab and other autonomous Tesla vehicles could be used as taxis by their owners in the near future.

Although the introduction of a taxi-hailing app was expected, this issue was not touched upon. The introduction of Cybercab, which was planned to be held in August, was postponed to October due to the design change. While its competitors use Lidar technology, Tesla relies on camera combinations and advanced computer systems for autonomous driving.

Autonomous Driving Did Not Provide the Assurance the Research Community Expected

Professor Samitha Samaranayake from Cornell University stated that Tesla’s camera and computer-based driving system did not provide the assurance that the autonomous driving research community expected. Speaking to the BBC, Samaranayake stated that such a large number of autonomous vehicles on the roads causes serious safety concerns.

Compete with Google and Competitors

Tesla has been working for a long time on a vehicle with fully autonomous driving capability that would rival Waymo, developed by Google. Waymo robotaxis, which are frequently seen on the streets of San Francisco, are also spreading to cities such as Phoenix, Los Angeles and Austin.

Google’s parent company Alphabet plans to add Hyundai Ioniq 5 models to its Waymo fleet in the near future. Waymo’s fleet currently consists of Jaguar’s I-Pace models. In addition, it is known that China-based technology giant Baidu has plans to expand its robotaxi unit Apollo Go outside of China, and these vehicles are actively serving in many cities in China.

Optimus Robots Introduced

At the event, Elon Musk also introduced Optimus models, humanoid robots produced by Tesla. Musk claimed that these robots will be actively used in daily life in the near future and that they can “do any job.” In the video shown, Optimus robots were seen doing housework, providing service and bringing mail.

Musk stated that the price of these robots will be between 20 and 30 thousand dollars. In the final scenes of the We, Robot event, viewers were presented with images of a robot preparing a drink.
These innovative projects of Elon Musk’s Tesla for the future show that it aims to make great strides in autonomous vehicle and robot technologies.
