History of Father’s Day

On July 5, 1908, a church in West Virginia hosted a ceremony to honor the memory of the 362 men who died in a mine explosion last December. In this ceremony, the memory of 362 lost fathers was honored. However, this ceremony was a one-time private event and was not regularly celebrated.
Growing up as the daughter of an American Civil War veteran, Sonora Smart Dodd believed that like Mother’s Day, fathers should have their own special day. His father had raised his six children alone in their mother’s absence. Dodd started work to declare his father’s birthday, June 5, as Father’s Day, but the celebrations were postponed to the third Sunday in June as this date was not met.
Father’s Day was first celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. In 1924, United States President Calvin Coolidge supported the celebrations, but did not officially declare Father’s Day. In 1966, then-president Lyndon Johnson issued a statement announcing that the third Sunday in June would be celebrated as Father’s Day each year. In 1972, Father’s Day was declared a public holiday in the USA with the signature of President Richard Nixon.
