Instagram has launched a new restriction on users under the age of 18, called “teen accounts.” The measure aims to limit underage users’ access to content on the platform and their interactions with other users.
These regulations, which came into force in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia as of September 17, will come into effect in the European Union towards the end of 2024 and in Turkey and other countries in January.
What Precautions Were Taken?
With the new regulations, the privacy settings of young accounts will automatically be “private.” This means that only followers the user accepts will be able to see and interact with posts. Users under the age of 18 will only be able to message people who follow each other.
Additionally, sensitive content that may be encountered by teen users in the Explore and Reels sections will be filtered out. Violent content and sensitive topics like cosmetic product ads will be less likely to be seen by this age group.
Daily Use and Sleep Mode
Younger accounts will encourage users to exit the app at certain times. For example, alerts will be sent when daily usage exceeds 60 minutes. Additionally, accounts will go into “sleep mode” between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., during which time notifications will be muted and messages will be automatically replied to.
Parental Control
Parents will be able to monitor their children’s accounts, allowing them to manage their child’s settings or allow them to manage their accounts. Parents will also be able to see who their child has messaged in the past week, but they will not be able to access the content of their messages.
Parents will be able to determine the time their children use Instagram and restrict their access to the platform at certain times. In addition, thanks to the new technologies offered by Instagram, users who do not declare their age correctly will be detected and their accounts will be restricted.
