Famous for its gigantic statues, Mount Nemrut contains the traces of the king of the Komagene state, who aimed for immortality and saw himself as a god.

It is estimated that these tunnels were built to hide the tomb of the king. However, the tomb could not be unearthed despite the work of 40 different archaeologists. This structure, which was built as a temple tomb, has a more complex and unsolvable structure than the Egyptian pyramids. This mysterious temple was built in 62 BC by the King of the Komagene State as his own tomb. His goal is to continue his eternal life as a god.
Until the 1900s, the local people in the region did not go here because they believed that Mount Nemrut was cursed. In the memoirs of the archaeologist who made the first excavations in the temple, it is believed that many of the villagers who came here for treasure and entered the underground tunnels were cursed because they were struck by lightning on the way back, or because they could not get out of the interior. It is not known exactly where these tunnels end. There are also researchers who say that the people of Komagene live inside Mount Nemrut and that the complex underground tunnels are proof of this.
The question of how these gigantic structures were built more than 2000 years ago, and how 8-10-ton stones were transported to the high point of this mountain, which has difficult conditions, still cannot be fully answered.

The Hittites disappeared thousands of years before the Komagene State and disappeared without a trace. While the Hittites were once the most powerful empire in the world, this populous nation has disappeared and no trace has been found. Perhaps these people, fleeing from their enemies, may have hid in the mountains under the leadership of their King and established an underground realm in order to survive. There are many artifacts showing Hittite influence on Mount Nemrut.
Komagene State is a state with very small borders. But when the Roman Empire attacked their country, they defeated Rome and the great Rome had to ask for peace. The records of the Roman generals describe how shocked this battle was to them. While they were planning to take the Komagene state immediately, thousands of soldiers from unknown origin surrounded them and destroyed the Roman army.
According to the generals, these people are portrayed as warriors from the underworld. Maybe this is the answer to the endless underground tunnels and the king’s tomb that cannot be found on Mount Nemrut.
