The new generation “MEMS Neurostor” processor developed by Middle East Technical University (METU) aims to revolutionize the energy efficiency of electronic devices. With this technology, the charging time of mobile phones will increase to one year, while great progress will be made in the security of personal data. A Great Invention in the Field of Energy Efficiency from METU
Prof. from METU Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department. Dr. Barış Bayram and Research Assistant Berre Vize, microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based “neuristor” developed its processor. This technology, implemented with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, TÜBİTAK and YÖK, aims to radically reduce the energy consumption of devices and increase efficiency.
New Technology Designed Inspired by the Human Brain
MEMS Neurostorwas developed inspired by the integrated structure of processing and memory units in the human brain. Prof. Dr. Bayram stated that they solved the high energy consumption and delay problems encountered during data transfer in traditional processors by combining memory and processing units in the same structure.
Bayram said, “The processors used today can perform operations that the brain performs with only 25 watts of energy, with 25 megawatts of energy. “MEMS Neurostor will eliminate this huge difference and significantly reduce energy consumption,” he said.
It Will Be Possible to Charge Mobile Phones Once a Year
With new technology, the battery life of mobile phones will be extended and charging time will increase to annual levels. Prof. Dr. Bayram explained that if the existing transistors are replaced with MEMS neuristors, it will be sufficient to charge mobile phones only once a year.

Revolutionary Step in Data Security
MEMS Neurostor not only provides energy efficiency; It also takes an important step in data security. Prof. Dr. Bayram stated that these processors will have local data processing capacity, so devices will not need to share data with servers. This development will increase the security of personal data and minimize privacy risks.
Artificial Intelligence and Environmentally Friendly Solutions
Bayram emphasized that the new technology will not only be limited to individual devices, but will also save energy in artificial intelligence and big data servers. Stating that the servers where technology giants use sea water for cooling can work smoothly even in desert conditions, Bayram said, “This technology takes a big step towards an environmentally friendly future.”

Negotiations with World Giants Begin
MEMS Neurostor technology attracted the attention of giant companies such as HP, IBM, NVIDIA and Amazon, and negotiations were initiated. Prof. Dr. Bayram said, “This will be a revolution not only for Türkiye, but worldwide.”
Research Assistant Berre Vize said that MEMS Neuristor can make revolutionary changes in critical sectors such as health, finance and transportation. Vize stated that this invention offers an excellent infrastructure for faster and more efficient artificial intelligence applications. He announced that they will continue their work rapidly to make Turkey a global leader in the field of neuromorphic processors.
