The King Aragon staircase was built in 1420 during the Genoese occupation of Corsica. At that time the Genoese were ruling Corsica and the town of Bonifacio in the south of Corsica was of strategic importance. The town was surrounded by walls and had a strong defense against attacks from the sea. However, it was weak against attack from the land. For this reason, the Escalier du Roi d’Aragon, the King’s Aragon staircase, located east of Bonifacio, was carved overnight. The ladder was built in order to be able to notice the attackers coming towards the town in time and to complete the defense preparations. Today, it has become the center of attention of tourists.
