The Most Interesting Human Error in History: How It Transformed a Lake and Its Ecosystem from Sweet to Salty?

The incident that took place in Lake Peigneur, Louisiana, USA, on November 20, 1980, went down in history as one of the most striking examples showing how human error can have devastating consequences when combined with nature. A critical coordinate error made by a drilling team carrying out oil exploration led to the drilling of a giant salt mine under the lake.

This mistake, which was not noticed at first, quickly turned into a vortex that got out of control and virtually emptied Lake Peigneur underground. The lake, which was once shallow and filled with fresh water, turned into a completely different structure within hours, deep, salty and whose ecosystem was completely changed.

This lake, which today contains brackish water, is considered the deepest lake in Louisiana, with its maximum depth reaching 60 meters. The lake, which takes its name from the French word peigneur meaning “sweeping, sweeping”, was a quiet nature area only three meters deep before 1980, containing fresh water and used for recreational purposes by the public.

Salt Dome and Underground Danger

The geological structure under the lake was the main cause of the disaster. A large salt dome beneath Lake Peigneur pushed the Earth’s crust upward, resulting in the formation of Jefferson Island.

In petroleum geology, salt domes are critical structures that determine not only landforms but also the location of oil and natural gas deposits. The same salt dome was also home to an extensive salt mine operated by the Diamond Crystal Salt Company from 1919.

This mine extended approximately 460 meters below the surface and consisted of multi-layered tunnels. During the extraction of salt, large pillars of salt were left in place to prevent the tunnels from collapsing. However, these pillars were extremely susceptible to rapid dissolution upon contact with fresh water.

Drilling Error and Birth of the Vortex

On the day of the disaster, the drilling platform commissioned by Texaco was conducting exploratory drilling near Jefferson Island. The platform’s 36 cm diameter drill bit drilled into an inactive level of the mine, at a depth of approximately 374 metres. This error, which was not noticed at first, started an irreversible process within a few hours. Fresh lake water began to fill the mine, the salt rapidly dissolved and the hole gradually widened.

This process It caused the formation of a huge vortex that pulled the lake underground. The whirlpool sucked in not only the water but everything on and around the lake. As part of Jefferson Island collapsed, the lake bed virtually emptied.

As the amount of water flowing into the mine increased, the direction of flow of the Delcambre Canal, which normally drains the lake into Vermilion Bay, reversed. This time, salt water from the Gulf of Mexico began to flow towards the drying lake bed. At the same time, the air compressed by the water filling the mine cavities gushed out of the chimneys at high pressure and reached the surface.

Loss, Salvation and Luck

One of the most remarkable aspects of the disaster was that no human lives were lost. 55 workers in the mine were evacuated regularly with a single elevator, thanks to an employee who noticed the situation and raised the alarm. The team on the drilling platform also managed to escape just before the platform completely sank. Despite this, the surrounding natural area was severely damaged and three dogs were reported to have died. Days later, when the water balance was restored, most of the barges lost in the vortex resurfaced.

Legal Process and the New Identity of the Lake

After the disaster, it was not clear who was responsible. Authorities could not definitively determine whether incorrect drilling coordinates or inaccurate mine maps caused the accident. Despite this, Texaco and related companies agreed to pay millions of dollars in damages. Mining activities were completely terminated a few years later.

Today, Lake Peigneur is no longer the freshwater lake it once was. Its depth increased, it was filled with salt water, and its ecosystem changed radically. Freshwater creatures have been replaced by marine species, and the lake has been irreversibly transformed by human hands.
