Researchers from Kurashiki University of Science and Arts in Japan set out to study the “mermaid” in early February 2022, with the permission of temple priests. Using a variety of techniques such as X-ray and Computed Tomography scanning, radiocarbon dating, electron microscopy and DNA analysis, they investigated this macabre artifact in detail. The team published their findings on February 7, and the resulting information showed that the mermaid’s nature was much stranger than previous guesses.
The results revealed that the mermaid’s body did not belong to a monkey, but instead consisted of fabric, paper and cotton held together by metal pins running from the neck to the waist. It was also painted with a paste made from a mixture of sand and charcoal.
However, interestingly, the mermaid’s body was covered with components taken from other animals.
