The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest reef system and consists of 2,900 reefs and 900 islands. Covering a total area of 344,400 km², this reef system is located off the Queensland coast of the 2,600 km wide Coral Sea. This massive structure is formed by billions of tiny organisms called coral polyps.
Reef, in maritime terminology, refers to structures that are formed underwater by the accumulation of rock, sand and sea creatures at the lowest water level formed by the tidal movement of water, usually at a depth of six fathoms (about 11 meters) or less. While many reefs are formed as a result of abiotic deposition of sand, the action of waves on rocks, and other natural processes, the most well-known are coral reefs formed by the action of corals and calcareous algae in tropical seas. These biotic processes lead to the predominant formation of coral reefs.
The Great Barrier Reef was discovered by Captain James Cook when his ship “Endeavour” sat on the reef on June 11, 1770. Although the ship was damaged in this incident, Cook and his crew managed to save the ship from sinking and carried their ship ashore to the area now known as Cooktown, Queensland. Repairing the damage to the ship took about seven weeks, after which Cook and his crew continued their journey.
