The Sietch Nevada project, designed as an underground city; Prepared by the University of Toronto design team. The project is a water storage city designed with the idea that the drought will increase and wars will be fought for water in the future. The underground city, which is considered within the scope of the project, will be located in the tunnels and caves that provide water storage in the oasis to be built in the desert. In the city, which is also called the Underground Venice, there will be residences and commercial structures around the water channels.

Due to the changes in the climate in recent years, natural disasters such as floods and droughts have been experienced intensely. Matsys Designs, who designed the project, presented the “Geometric Cities Half Underground” study, which has extraordinary features to combat drought, as a suggestion. Matsys Designs designed this project inspired by Frank Herbert’s famous 1965 novel Dune. As the city fights the challenges of nature, it will not only provide shelter but also meet other requirements of modern life.

This project has been considered as a solution to regions affected by extreme drought, especially in the southwest of the USA. Sietch Nevada is seen as a harbinger of desperate times when societies are forced to somehow store and accumulate water. Every year, more and more people move to the region, causing water scarcity and drought. The waters of the Colorado River are starting to become insufficient to support millions of people. It is thought that very soon I will have to resort to something like this project.

While a safe haven is created in the hexagonal cellular structures of the underground city, water and energy will be collected on the surface, and food will be grown using urban agriculture and aquaculture techniques. The energy of the city will come from above, while the life force of the city is collected in underground warehouses. When viewed from above, the project looks like desert flowers filled with various elements such as cell chambers, ponds, skylights, agricultural domes and energy harvesters. The project is also being considered for drylands in the United States.
