White Sands Desert with Crystal White Sands

White Sands National Park is a magnificent desert area located in the US state of New Mexico. This desert is an exceptionally beautiful gypsum desert consisting of white sand dunes. The largest gypsum desert in the world, the National park covers 145,762 acres in the Tularosa Basin and includes 275 square miles of gypsum crystalline white sand dunes that make up 41% of this area. Composed of white sands, the desert almost completely reflects sunlight and heat. Therefore, in this desert, unlike other deserts, the sands are not hot.

Thousands of years ago, the land in the Tularosa Basin was home to large lakes, streams, grasslands, and Ice Age mammals. With the warming of the climate, rain and melting snow dissolved the gypsum from the surrounding mountains and carried it into the basin. Further warming and drying caused the lakes to evaporate and selenite crystals to form. Strong winds then smashed these crystals to form gypsum sand.

White Sands National Park is an important conservation area with its natural beauties and unique ecosystem. There are thousands of animal species in the park, most of which are invertebrates. Many animal species have a white or off-white coloration. There are at least 45 endemic species living in the park, most of which are moth species. The Tularosa Basin has been home to a variety of human settlements, from Paleo-Indians to modern farmers and miners.

The White Sands Desert is constantly in motion. The sand, which rises for meters with the wind, forms hills at different heights. Given the unique characteristics of the desert, it is almost impossible to find plants in the middle. Some plants, such as yucca and poplar, whose roots can grow up to 30 meters long, adapt to the environment and only a few species can survive in this region. On the edge of the desert it is possible to observe plants of rare species such as cacti and even nara melons.

Visiting White Sands National Park

White Sands National Park was originally designated a White Sands National Monument by President Herbert Hoover on January 18, 1933. It was later redesignated as a national park by Congress and approved by law by President Donald Trump on December 20, 2019. The park is the most visited NPS (National Park Service) site in New Mexico, with approximately 600,000 visitors per year.

Visitors can enjoy activities such as a drive into the heart of the dunes, picnic areas, dune camping, marked hiking trails, and tobogganing on the dunes. Orientation and nature walks are organized in the park, accompanied by rangers, and these events take place at different times and months throughout the year.

History of the White Sands Desert

The history of the White Sands Desert goes back millions of years. This desert was formed as a result of geological processes and climate changes. About 70 million years ago, this region was covered by a large inland sea, the Western Interior Sea. With the retreat of the sea, large amounts of seafloor sediment and crusts accumulated in the area. Over time, these deposits were compacted and turned into rock, forming gypsum.

Later, the San Andres and Sacramento mountains were uplifted by tectonic movements. These mountain formations formed the western and eastern borders of the desert. The mountains protected the gypsum in the desert, providing resistance to erosion. Climate changes were also effective in the formation of the desert. Over time, the temperature increased in this region and the amount of precipitation decreased. These climatic conditions accelerated the evaporation of water and led to the formation of selenite crystals that began to accumulate on the surface of the gypsum.

Wind has an important effect on shaping the desert. Selenite crystals are carried by the wind, contributing to the formation of white sand dunes. Under the influence of the wind, the dunes are constantly moving, and the landscape of the desert is constantly changing. Today, the White Sands Desert is a major tourist attraction for visitors.
