Scientists have discovered a huge ocean under the Earth’s crust containing much more water than on the surface of the Earth. This water source is stored in a rock called ringwoodite. However, this water source is not yet accessible because it is located approximately 400 miles (643 km) below ground.

Geophysicist Steve Jacobsen, who was part of this discovery, said that water is stored in a sponge-like manner within mantle rocks, a fourth state that is not liquid, solid, or gas, with ringwoodite able to absorb water like a sponge. He also noted that this mineral may contain a lot of water under deep mantle conditions.

Discovery Is Crucial to Understanding How the Earth Was Formed
The findings were discovered by scientists from Northwestern University in Illinois through seismometers used to measure waves produced by earthquakes in the United States. Scientists have found that the waves are not limited to the Earth’s surface and move through the core of the planet. By measuring the speed and depth of these waves, the researchers determined that water was trapped in the ringwoodite rock.
If the rock contains only 1 percent water, that means there is three times more water under the earth’s crust than there is in the oceans on the surface. This discovery could be important for understanding how Earth formed and could support the theory that Earth’s water “comes from within” rather than asteroids and comets.

“I think we’re seeing evidence of the Earth water cycle that could help explain the abundance of water on the surface of our habitable planet,” Jacobsen said. “Scientists have been searching for this lost deep water for decades.”
For now, researchers have only found evidence of ringwoodite rock below the US surface. However, Jacobsen and his team want to determine whether this layer surrounds our entire planet. It is estimated that the water found underground is more than three times that of the surface oceans.
