The police intervened in the strikes and locked the workers in the factory. In the fire that broke out during these events, 129 workers, mostly women, who could not escape from the barricades set up in front of the factory, died. More than 10 thousand people attended the funerals of the workers.
Women’s Day first; In 1910, in Copenhagen, Denmark, it came to the agenda at the women’s meeting of the 2nd International. The person who brought it to the agenda and suggested a women’s day is Clara Zetkin, one of the leaders of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. More than one hundred women attending the conference from 17 different countries unanimously accepted Zetkin’s proposal. In order to win women’s rights that started in 1857 and to commemorate the struggle of women together; It was decided to celebrate Women’s Day every year.
In the years when women’s day was first celebrated, it was always celebrated in the spring without any specific day. In the International Women’s Conference held in Moscow in 1921, the date was accepted as 8 March. I and II. During World War II, Women’s Day was banned in some countries. However, women’s day, which started to be mentioned again in the United States at the end of the 1960s, came to the fore more strongly.
