Palpa Lines A Thousand Year Older Than Nazca

Palpa figures and lines, unlike Nazca works, are located on the slopes or tops of the hills. These drawings are thought to be a complex solar calendar created by the Paracas culture or drawn to please the ancient gods.

It is thought that the lines, found across hundreds of square kilometers in the Nazca Region, may be remnants of little-understood rituals that may have been connected to their deity or to the life-giving rain. These are described as ground drawings and are spread over the sandy soil of Nazca province.

Discovery and Properties of Palpa Lines

In 2018, Peruvian archaeologists using drones discovered more than 50 new examples of Nazca desert monuments in Palpa province. This discovery revealed the existence of more monuments that left their mark on the local surface with very fine lines. At the same time, archaeologists used drones for the first time to explore local geoglyphs and map out previously unseen details. Some of the lines discovered in 2018 belong to the region where the Nazca culture reigned between 200-700 AD. Archaeologists think that some of the lines are artifacts of the Paracas and Topara cultures, dated between 500 BC and 200 AD. However, many theorists claim that the Palpa Lines were made a thousand years before the Nazca Lines.

But the Paracas culture is an Andean society with an extensive knowledge of irrigation and water management. This society flourished on the Paracas Peninsula in the Paracas Region of Pisco Province in Peru’s Ica Region between 800 BC and 100 BC. More information about the Paracas culture has been uncovered by Julio Tello during the great excavations on the beach of Paracas in the 1920s. Known for their long skulls, the Paracas people are distinguished by their knowledge of water management and irrigation. The Palpa lines are still not fully mapped and were probably made a thousand or centuries before the Nazca lines.
