The Ten Commandments in Judaism; by god Mount SinaiIn Hz. These are the first laws given to the Israelites through the Prophet Moses. The laws given to the Israelites are not limited to the Ten Commandments. It contains more laws and rules. Giving the Ten Commandments is closely related to the historical and cultural characteristics of that period. Sending scriptures; it shows that people have sinned, deteriorated, and the world has been corrupted. In order to rectify this situation, Allah performs many events that punish people and separate them from one another. The Ten Commandments envisage that the Israelites should serve God, abide by the rules given to them, and show respect to one another.
10 Commandments and Their Characteristics
1- You will have no other god but me
This order is given to prevent wrong beliefs and to prevent wrong behaviors such as worshiping idols. He wants people to believe and worship only one god. This belief enables people to put God at the center of their lives and to live by trusting him.
2- You shall not bow down before idols or worship them.
What is meant by this command is to prevent the spread of idols and to prevent people from equating their Lord with idols.
3- You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
He counsels us not to use God’s name in vain and not to defile His name. It was emphasized that using God’s name with false sentences would be disrespectful to Him, and that it should be prevented from being used that way.
4- You will work for six days and do all your work; but the seventh day is dedicated to me, the Sabbath day to the Lord your God
He emphasizes the importance of people’s work and wants the seventh day to be dedicated as the Sabbath in God’s name. It is reminded that God has given us health and blessings, and it is emphasized that we must remember and honor Him in order to pay off our debt to Him. The message emphasizes that people should not only thank each other for the good they have done, but also thank God for the good he has done.
5- Respect your parents
They advise people to respect their parents. Respect is one of the basic rules of our life and is shown primarily towards our parents. Respect for our parents builds habits and enables us to learn to respect others as well. The purpose of this order is for the society to live in a peaceful environment by respecting each other.
6- You will not kill a man
They advise people not to end someone else’s life. In line with divine beliefs, it is believed that life is given by God, and therefore it is forbidden for people to take their souls. Even during jihad, one should not go to extremes. Taking people’s lives would be a cruel and merciless act. The aim with this command is that people live in goodness, mercy and beauty, and that sad consequences do not occur.
7- You shall not commit adultery
It emphasizes the importance of fidelity in marriage and that sexual relations should be carried out in a legal marriage. Illegitimate relationships can damage family life and have unwelcome consequences in society. Therefore, this commandment advises people to live faithfully and respectfully, preserving their family life.
8- You will not steal
It aims to respect people’s labor and not to infringe on the rights of others. Stealing other people’s property or labor for our own gain is wrong and forbidden. This commandment asks people to be honest, fair, and respectful.
9- You shall not falsely testify against your neighbor.
It aims to protect people’s respect, loyalty and honesty to each other. Perjury can tarnish and damage another’s reputation. This commandment advises people to be honest and fair to one another and helps them to maintain social relations.
10- You shall not covet anything of your neighbor.
This order states that the neighbor’s property should be respected and their rights should not be violated. Coveting the neighbor’s property means violating their rights and is prohibited. Also, coveting neighbor’s property can disrupt social relations and create strife among people. Therefore, this commandment states that people should respect each other, not violate the rights of their neighbors, and respect their property.
